1. Monthly Ride Schedule - Southeast Michigan
For the months of December through March, the Wolver-Bents are on
their winter ride schedule of two rides a month at Willow Metropark only
(Metro Beach rides resume in the Spring), starting at a later hour (2pm) to
take advantage of the afternoon "heat".
Specifically, the rides will be on the 2nd and 4th Saturday (March 13 and
March 27) starting from the Washago Pond north parking lot (area "J" on the
map link which has open, heated, restrooms), starting at 2pm. The usual
winter route is to first head south to Oakwoods Metropark and take a break
to warm up at the Nature Center there.
Willow Metropark is located in the southwest Metro Detroit area, just south
of I-94 and Detroit Metro Airport. Take I-275 south to exit 11, South Huron
Road (look for the Willow park signs), and go east to the park's north
entrance. There is a $4 entrance fee to the park on weekends with a $20
annual pass available. At the Willow ride, riders will travel on the
interconnected Willow, Oakwoods and Lower Huron Metropark bike path system
where distances up to 27 miles can be ridden (or set your own lower
mileage).
2. 2010 Michigan Bicycle Ride Calendars Out
For some "cabin fever" reading for those warms months in the future, the
annual League of Michigan Bicyclists Michigan bicycle ride calendar is now
available online at
www.lmb.org (LMB members should have received a printed copy in the mail
by now). The Ohio bike event calendar should be out later in March at
http://www.ohiocycling.info/OBEC.html.
3. Bike Feast Cancelled
Just one amendment to the League of Michigan Bicyclists 2010 calendar listed
above in item #2. The annual March "Bike Feast" held in the Detroit area has
been cancelled this year. Also, on the calender there is no mention of what
had been the annual Wolverine 200 bike ride on Detroit's Belle Isle. The
ride was cancelled due to road construction last year, and this year there
isn't even a mention of it on the Wolverine Sports Club's (the sponsor)
webpage.
4. Wintertime - A Great Time To Support Your Local Bike Shop
As we have said before, winter is a tough time for local bike shops,
especially in these tough economic times. So if you need bike accessories,
or work done on your bike, consider taking it in to your local shop in these
cold months. For working on a bike, shops have plenty of time so you will
probably have your bike back sooner than you think. Take that same bike in
for work in May, and it may be a week or longer before you get it back.
Another plus is the shop staff will probably have loads of time to talk with
you about gear, tune-ups and anything else bike related.
